Not a subscriber? Here’s what you missed:

  • “Opening Editorial”. Our editor, David Newport, shares thoughts on mining other games for rules when designing a game.
  • “Simple Campaign System for Sling and Arrows Squared”. Kevin White provides a complete map-less campaign system suitable for use with a variety of periods and rules.
  • “The Capture of Malikan Airstrip Part 2.” Tim Lamont wraps up his battle report of a game played using Battle Group (see issue 225 for part 1), illustrated with photos of the author’s sand table setup. Includes a map of the situation, thoughts on the game, and the pros and cons of sand tables.
  • “Heavy Metal Thunder”. Kevin White gives us a complete card-based set of rules for playing a jousting tournament. Includes Quick Reference Sheet and sample scorecard.
  • “Coming Out of the Woodwork”. Inspired by solo systems that allow the player to control a formed army, while the system controls native units, Brian Cameron takes on creating a system for use with two formed armies.
  • “Snakes and Ladders Campaign System (Horse and Musket)”. Kevin White shares enhancements to the “Snakes and Ladder Campaign System” discussed in Bob Cordery’s The Portable Wargames Compendium. Includes methods for determining tabletop force arrival and positive/negative effects from those squares on the gameboard.
  • “Solo Boardgames I’ve Been Playing Recently”. Brian Cameron reviews three solitaire boardgames from Victory Point and Worthington: Levee-en-masse, Cruel Necessity, and Keep Up the Fire!
  • “On Maps and Cartograms or the Vikings had it so easy…. ” John Barnard takes us on a journey through the evolution of his campaign maps for wargames, sharing a variety of ideas for the construction and use. This trip culminates in an intriguing design that accounts for speed of travel rather than geographic distance.
  • “A LONEWARRIOR COMPENDIUM”. Banic, Barbuto, & Yorio. What started as a discussion in the comments here on the blog has evolved into a full-fledged project to create a searchable index of Lone Warrior articles, not just by title, but by subject content period, etc. This article is as much a summary of the discussion as a call for volunteers.
