New Site Design

As you may or may not have noticed, we have a new site design!

It’s actually been up for a little bit, but I didn’t want to steal the thunder of recent posts with this one.

After trying more templates than I can count, this template seems to offer a reasonable amount of control over the site layout, while not relying heavily on images (which we often don’t have with blog posts) the way many modern templates do.

Some things to note:

  • It is a responsive design.

For those of us who do most of our web surfing and blog reading on our phones or tablets, the reading experience should be nicer. Those who use their laptops or desktops should find the site equally readable.

  • You can click on post title in the scroll at the top of the home page screen to go to the post in question.
  • To search, click the magnifying glass in the upper right.

This will bring up a search box:

  • The site-wide sidebar (with the exception of the blog) is on the right and contains only links to recent posts and comments.

Other content, such as sites of interest to solo wargamers needs to be revested and updated with current information.

I am curious as to whether or not you used those links in recent years or if you found value in them.

If so, what current, active sites, online forums, etc. are of value to the solo gamer and should be on a dedicated page of resources for solo wargamers.

EDIT: I made some changes that made it less distracting to have the Archives and Categories in the right-hand sidebar, which eliminated the need to have the sidebar on the left on the Blog’s page.

Both the Archives and Categories now appear as a drop-down on the sidebar.

Thank you to George Arnold for pointing out to me that the recent posts and comments were missing from the blog sidebar!

  • At the bottom of blog posts are suggested related articles. It uses the tags to determine what it should display.
  • The “Log in” link is now in the page footer. Logging in is not necessary to use the site or to leave comments.

The Register link is still hidden for now.

As mentioned, you do not need to log in to use the site or leave comments.

However, if you would like to register, you can reach out to me via the contact form and I will set you up with an account.

  • What changes would you like to see (other than going back to the old site!)?
  • What additions? Removals?
  • What do you think of the red (it is the default for the template, but it can be changed)?
  • What about the white-text-on-red-background tag highlighting? Is this hard to read for anyone? I’d like our site to be reading-friendly as possible.

  2. John, I like the new look of the blog and if it makes it easier for those accessing the blog with phones or tablets, that’s a double win.

    I doubt anyone is worried about you stealing their thunder with a post about these big changes to the blog. Thunder away!

    As far as the other blogs/websites of interest, some of those were probably out of date by now. But the link to the Don Featherstone trove of his material would be nice to have access to; the same with the link to Bob Cordery’s blog, which is always of interest.

    One question, how do I access all the old Categories now — say, “Periods-Napoleonics,” for example — to get all the old blog articles in that Category?

      That’s a good question!
      Let me see what I can do. Probably later this evening I’ll have an update.
      As for the links, I’ll start assembling a resources page and add it to them menus.

    2. Hi George,
      I have re-added the Categories.

      While doing so, I found that I can include them as a drop-down instead of a long list – which greatly improves the display. Ditto for the Archives.

      Both are now available in the right sidebar, and I have updated this post to reflect that. A forthcoming post will show the change as well.
